Honorable Mayor Ted Tedesco
And Members of the City Council
Of The City of Ames, Iowa
Re: Speeding Ordinance Technical Amendment
Dear Mayor Tedesco and Council Members:
You have on your agenda an ordinance proposing to repeal two provisions of the City's traffic code
dealing with speed limits. The proposed ordinance would re-enact those same speed restrictions, but
adding penalty provisions to them. It is a technical amendment and therefore we are asking that it be
passed on all three readings.
The reason this is requested is that the Ames Police Department recently began using electronic citation
issuing devices. These devices ultimately will enable the Police to do away with paper traffic tickets.
However, in order for these devices to read and understand our traffic codes for speed and insert the
correct penalty, the ordinance must be reformatted to include the penalty within the speeding
subsection. That is what this ordinance will accomplish. I would be happy to provide you with further
information for your decision.
Yours truly,
Judy K. Parks
Assistant City Attorney
Encl.
