COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: PARKING PROHIBITIONS FOR SOUTH FORK SUBDIVISION, 1ST
ADDITION
BACKGROUND:
During the review of the parking prohibitions for South Fork (1st Addition) Subdivision,
staff worked with developers on plans to designate parking prohibitions on one or both
sides of new subdivision streets. The plans proposed for these new subdivisions are
typical to ones approved in the past that call for providing the desired street widths for
the safe passage of traffic and emergency vehicles. According to these plans, parking
is proposed on one side along all of these "local" and "collector" type streets to provide
a safe street width for traffic and emergency vehicles.
It has been the past practice to designate parking prohibitions on one side along
new subdivision streets with typical widths of 26' for local streets and 31' for
collector streets for traffic safety purposes. With these street widths, parking should
be prohibited on one side to accommodate two-way traffic flow. If parking were allowed
on both sides of the street, the available street width for traffic would be reduced to 7'
for local streets and 12' for collector streets. This would not only create a hazardous
situation for traffic, but also would restrict access by emergency vehicles.
For South Fork Subdivision, the following prohibitions are appropriate:
Marigold Drive: On the south side from Sunflower Drive to Beedle Drive
Sunflower Drive: On the east side from Tripp Street south to the end of the
street
Dotson Drive: On the east side from Baughman Road south to the end of
the street. This is an extension of the current regulation on
Dotson Drive from Lincoln Way to Baughman Road.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance establishing the following
parking regulations:
a) No parking anytime on the south side of Marigold Drive from Sunflower
Drive to Beedle Drive.
b) No parking anytime on the east side of Sunflower Drive from Tripp Street
south to the end of the street.
c) No parking anytime on the east side of Dotson Drive from Baughman
Road south to the end of the street.
2. Establish no parking anytime on all streets within the subdivision.

3. Reject the parking prohibition program and allow parking on both sides of all
streets which will restrict emergency vehicle access.

number 1, thereby, directing the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance establishing the
