BACKGROUND: The Electrical Board of Appeals has reviewed the 2002 National Electrical Code and proposes to adopt it with two (2) local revisions. 1. Change Section 7.101(3) the reference to Section 336.4 of the National Electrical Code. The Board recommends this change for the following reason: • The new numbering system of the 2002 National Electrical Code changed the reference number. 2. Add to Section 7.101 (4) All references in the aforesaid 2002 National Electrical Code to the building code shall be deemed a reference to the applicable building code set out in and adopted by Chapter 5 of the City of Ames Municipal Code. The Board recommends this change for the following reason: • This addition is recommended in response to the National Electrical Code's reference to a building code. Since there are more than one building code available for adoption, any reference by the National Electrical Code will be to the building code adopted by the City of Ames. The Board held a public hearing on November 7, 2002. Almost 300 letters were sent out informing electrical contractors and electricians of the proposed changes. Seven persons were present to observe the hearing. After a short discussion, those in attendance unanimously approved the changes. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Approve the attached ordinance as written adopting the 2002 National Electrical Code with the two (2) local revisions. 2. Reject the proposal. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council approve Alternative#1 approving the ordinance adopting the 2002 National Electrical Code with the two (2) local amendments proposed by the Electrical Board of Appeals.
