HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated August 13, 2002 n Item # / o Date: August 13, 2002 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: REVISION TO PARKING REGULATION ON 20TH STREET NEAR AMES HIGH SCHOOL BACKGROUND: In conjunction with the Allenview Neighborhood Traffic Study, Council directed that staff implement lane configuration changes to facilitate the traffic bound to and from the Ames High School area. As a result of that direction, staff has developed changes that will designate a new westbound lane on 20th Street from Hayes Avenue west to past the entrance drive to the school parking lot. In order to develop the new lane, parking must be removed from the north side of 20th Street from 85 feet east of Hayes Avenue west to the end of the street. This will allow the Hayes Avenue traffic to have a dedicated lane that continues west and eventually merges into a single westbound lane before arriving at Ames High Drive. Ames High School officials and local residents support this change. In addition, the existing ordinance restricting parking from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on school days on the north side of 20th Street from Fellows School to Hayes Avenue, needs to be modified to reflect the change in the 85 feet closest to Hayes. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Revise the parking regulations on 20th Street such that parking is prohibited at all times on the north side of the street from 85 feet east of Hayes Avenue west to the end of the street. In addition, modify the school day parking restriction on 20th Street to reflect the change in the easterly 85 feet closest to Hayes Avenue. 2. Reject the concept of new lane configurations and leave the parking prohibitions as they currently exist. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council accept alternative number 1 above and revise the parking regulations on 20th Street such that parking is prohibited at all times on the north side of the street from 85 feet east of Hayes Avenue west to the end of the street and that the school day parking restriction be modified to reflect the change in the easterly 85 feet closest to Hayes Avenue. Due to the approach of the school year, it is requested that all three readings be completed as soon as possible. COUNCIL ACTION:
