AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF
AMES,IOWA,BY REPEALING SUBSECTIONS 21.501(6)AND 21.501(18)(C)
AND RE-ADOPTING THE SAME REVISED WITH RESPECT TO CUTTING
NEW PAVEMENT TO REPLACE OR REMOVE WATER UTILITY SERVICE
LINE CONNECTIONS TO THE MAIN; REPEALING ANY AND ALL
ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT TO THE
EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT; PROVIDING A PENALTY; AND
ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ENACTED,by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa,that:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by
repealing subsections 21.501(6)and 21.501(18)(c)and re-adopting the same revised to state as follows:
"(6) Amend Section 101.4.1.3 UPC by adding a new paragraph as follows:
Service Line Abandonment. Whenever an individual service line is permanently
abandoned,the service line shall be physically disconnected as described below. The service shall
be considered to be abandoned when a permit is issued for a new or replacement ser-vice for that
property. Service shall also be considered to be abandoned when a service has been inactive or
unused for six months,unless an extension is granted in writing by the City. The service line shall
be physically disconnected within 30 days after abandonment. The water service shall be
disconnected at the corporation cock on the main. Sanitary sewer and foundation drain service lines
shall be disconnected at the curb on paved streets with a manufactured plug. All service
abandonments shall be inspected by the Engineering Division of Public Works. However,when the
forgoing would entail cutting concrete or asphalt paving that is less than five years old,the Director
of Public Works may require,as an alternative to the forgoing,that the owner of the property served
by the water service line make a cash deposit or provide a letter of credit,for a period not to exceed
five years,to secure for the City the cost of performing the said work at some time in the future.
(18)(C) Section 610.8 UPC notwithstanding,water service lines of any installation shall be at least
3/4 inch in diameter. Water service lines for any commercial property shall be at least one inch in
diameter. Any water service line 100 feet or more in length shall be at least one inch in diameter.
For service lengths of 200 feet or 300 feet, the minimum diameter shall be 1 '/4 inches and 1 '/z
inches, respectively. It is important to note that these are minimum diameters for service lines.
Larger diameters may be required to provide adequate service based on number of fixture units. See
Table 6-5. All new buildings shall have a minimum of a I inch water service line. However,when
the forgoing would entail cutting concrete or asphalt paving that is less than five years old, the
Director of Public Works may require,as an alternative to the forgoing,that the owner of the property
served by the water service line make a cash deposit or provide a letter of credit,for a period not to
exceed five years,to secure for the City the cost of performing the said work at some time in the
future. "
Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a municipal infraction punishable
by a penalty of$500 for a person's first violation thereof and$750 for each repeat violation.
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of
such conflict,if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as
required by law.
