REMINDER t�` I � III IOWA CITIES ARE REQUIRED TO REPRECINCT LEAGUE BY SEPTEMBER 1, 2001 °f CITIES Not all cities are required to reprecinct. The following cities are not required to precinct and may ignore this notice. ♦ Cities with populations 2,000 and under are considered to be part of the same precinct as the surrounding unincorporated township, unless the county board of supervisors ha taken contrary action. ♦ Cities with populations 3,500 and under, if the city only has one precinct. Cities required to review and file precinct plans: ♦ Cities with more than one precinct, and ♦ Cities with populations greater than 3,500 must review all precinct and ward boundaries, if any, to see whether the existing boundaries comply with current laws. If your city is required to review and/or change its precinct boundaries, the Secretary of State's office has prepared a worksheet to assist. A copy of this worksheet can be obtained in the following ways: ♦ On-line at http://www.sos.state.ia.us/PDFS/redistCitylnst.pdf or http:/www.iowaleague.org ♦ Calling the Secretary of State's office at (515) 281-8993 ♦ Calling the Iowa League of Cities at (515) 244-7282 Remember: ✓4 Precincts are required to follow state house and senate district boundaries. -�i For cities with wards, the election wards must follow precinct boundaries. �recincts and ward plans are required to be established by ordinance following a required public hearing. OPrior to final adoption, the county auditor must be given not less than seven nor more than ten days to offer comments on the proposed plans. The ordinance must include any concerns identified by the auditor. ♦ Approved plans must be submitted to the Secretary of St :by September 1, 2001. 1 a plan is not submitted, the Secretary of State will redraw th ns and ma e cost to the city. -over- How do I get started? ♦ Contact your county auditor. The county auditors have the census maps necessary to undertake this process and must be consulted prior to approving your plan. ♦ If you are located in the below listed counties, your county uses representation plan three and you MUST reprecinct with the cooperation of your county. No one will automatically send it to you. ♦ You can buy the redistricting file from the Census Bureau, or ♦ Borrow the CD or copy the data from someone else who already has the Census CD. What to ask for: ♦ CD-ROM titled "Census 2000 Redistricting File (P.L.94-171): Iowa." ♦ Prepayment is required ($50). ♦ American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. ♦ Your check or money order for $50 should be made payable to Commerce-Census. ♦ You may use your Census Bureau deposit account if you have one. The last of the three publications must be made no later than 30 days before the next general election. ♦ Precinct boundaries become effective January 15. They DO NOT affect this November's election.
