Dear Mayor Tedesco and City Council Members:
I am writing on behalf of St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 2210 Lincoln Way in Ames. St. Thomas
Aquinas has recently completed an addition and remodeling of its church and student center. The
architects and design consultants for the project have proposed an identification sign for the church.
The proposed sign in shown on the enclosed photograph.
We have met with City Staff and are informed that Section 5.220, subparagraph 2 of the City of
Ames sign regulations prevents the proposed sign. That Section as currently written would impose
a 16 square foot limit on any new identification sign for St. Thomas Aquinas. The staff also informs
us that the same problem has been encountered by other religious organizations at the conclusion of
their reconstruction and remodeling projects.
We would like you to refer this matter to staff for consideration of an amendment to the sign
regulations that would enable religious organizations to have appropriate signage as is shown on the
enclosed photograph. We appreciate your consideration of our request.
Yours very truly,
NYEMASTER, GOODE, VOIGTS, WEST, HANSELL& O'BRIEN, P.C.
