Wednesday, October 18, 2000 Q 02000 Ames City Council Law CLERK 515 Clark, P.O. Box 811 CITY Or'NINES,IOWA Ames, Iowa 50010 Dear Ames City Council Members, The Government of the Student Body(GSB) has shown great concern with the proposed Ames City Council ban on smoking. The GSB feels that student opinion on this matter is significant because of the number of students who frequent the establishments that would be most affected. This fact has led the GSB Senate to pursue an official stance on the issue. During the Government of the Student Body Senate Meeting of October 11, 2000 the GSB Senate voted in"quasi—committee of the whole"to make an unofficial recommendation to the Ames City Council regarding the proposed smoking ban. The recommendation states: The GSB Senate opposes the proposed smoking ban in bars, pool halls, and bowling alleys. However, the GSB does not take an official position regarding the smoking ban in restaurants at this time. The GSB Senate does expect to notify the Ames City Council of an official stance on the smoking ban in restaurants, but no resolution has been passed at this time. I sincerely hope that you will take the opinions of Iowa State University students into consideration when enacting city policy. The open and honest communication between Iowa State University Students and the Ames laity Government is an invaluable tool to ensuring a productive community. Respectfully yours, Charles Johnson Speaker of the Senate Government of the Student Body Iowa State University
