The Honorable Ted Tedesco, Mayor
and Members of the City Council
of the City of Ames, Iowa
Re: Ordinance to Set Compensation for Mayor and Council
Dear Mayor Tedesco and Council Members:
It was brought to my attention recently that during the budget wrap-up session on February 23, 1999,
the Council adopted a motion to increase compensation for the Mayor and Council effective
January 1, 2000, and that the higher rate of compensation has been paid since the first of the year.
However,Section 372.13(8),Code of Iowa, requires that the Mayor and Council's compensation be
set by ordinance. With this is the ordinance to be enacted to meet that requirement. The statute
prevents the increase in the Mayor's salary from becoming effective until after the beginning of the
next term of that office. The overpayments made to the Mayor will be refunded by adjustment on
future payments.
Yours truly,
X
