HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Legal Opinion to Council on compensation increase Ln - City Attorneys Office 515 Clark Avenue,P.O.Box 811 (raring Peopk Ames,IA 50010 Qna[ily Programs Phone: 515-239-5146 •Fax: 515-239-5142 F_xcepional snvice October 3, 2000 The Honorable Ted Tedesco, Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa Re: Ordinance to Set Compensation for Mayor and Council Dear Mayor Tedesco and Council Members: It was brought to my attention recently that during the budget wrap-up session on February 23, 1999, the Council adopted a motion to increase compensation for the Mayor and Council effective January 1, 2000, and that the higher rate of compensation has been paid since the first of the year. However,Section 372.13(8),Code of Iowa,requires that the Mayor and Council's compensation be set by ordinance. With this is the ordinance to be enacted to meet that requirement. The statute prevents the increase in the Mayor's salary from becoming effective until after the beginning of the next term of that office.
