HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Memo from Delbert Johnson requesting parking changes on Wilson July 27, 2000
TO: Scott Logan, Traffic Operations
City of Ames
FROM: Delbert Johnson, 1612 Wilson Ave., Ames
RE: Request for `No Parking' Zone
This is a written follow-up to our earlier conversations RE: the parking
problems on Wilson Avenue.
As I have shared with you on previous occasions, parking on Wilson
between 1612 and 1620 has become a very real problem. The Ames
Community Schools Maintenance Building is located at 1621 Wilson,
directly across from these addresses.
There is approximately 100 feet between the driveway approaches of
1612 and 1620 Wilson (room for 5 vehicles to park). When employees
of ACSD park in this space, there is a lot of congestion. The school
has numerous school busses, trucks, tractors, and other vehicles
coming and going throughout the day. In addition, thcrc are scull
trailers delivering school supplies and materials that are trying to
maneuver in and out of their parking lot with cars and trucks parked
along the street. There have been times when cars cannot get through
until other vehicles are moved.
As your department recorded on your traffic counter, 1000 vehicles
went past these two addresses in a 48 hour period. With cars coming
from both north and south on Wilson, plus the west (ACSD parking lot)
there are three directions to try and watch when backing out of our
driveways. With vehicles parked on the east side of Wilson, it becomes
a safety hazardous. The problem is worse in the winter when
snowplows have to clear roadways and cars are parked in their way.
The road becomes narrower and more hazardous.
I have enclosed photographs showing the areas we are concerned
about and examples of the numerous trucks, semis, etc. that add to the
congestion.
Please consider giving this area preference for a "No Parking Zone".
The safety of drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists is compromised with
the current status.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and consideration of this
request. I look forward to hearing from you.
