HomeMy WebLinkAboutA019 - Letter from Ames Mayor's Youth Committee - process of improving compliance tl Ames Mayor's Youth Committee Dear Mayor Tedesco, The Ames Mayor's Youth Committee has already begun the process of improving the compliance rate of the tobacco laws in Ames. We recognize that our community's businesses are struggling to comply with state and federal tobacco laws, we wish to recognize those who do. We believe that it is essential to attack the problems from both a negative and positive viewpoint. We expect that the city(or designee of the city) will address the fines and consequences that are associated with the violation of these laws. Allow us to pick of the positive reinforcement aspects of the solution. The youth of Ames are committed to stopping the smoking epidemic that has become apparent among Iowa teens. Although the surveys for Story County reflect that less than 15%of high school age youth smoke, this percentage is large enough to be cause for alarm and action. Tobacco sales to minors must be halted. We do not need more laws on the books, we must enforce the ones that already exist. The Ames Mayor's Youth Committee will advocate youth involvement in the process. It is crucial for Ames youth, educators and civic leaders to be involved in the process that will bring us to a solution that will be effective. We wish to pledge our support to the Ames City Council and to provide our services and aid wherever it is necessary. Sincerely, Andrew M. Goedeken Secretary, Ames Mayor's Youth Committee
