I am writing to object to the proposed change in zoning of the Brookside
Neighborhood to UCRM. The Brookside Neighborhood is the kind of
neighborhood the city should preserve, not seek to alter. It has a mix of
housing. Up and down the alley behind my house, you find homes in a
variety of styles and sizes; you find young families, elderly couples,
teachers, doctors, police officers. We are not a one-size fits all
neighborhood. We are not a car-dependent neighborhood dominated by two
and three-car garages; people can walk and bike and bus to campus or
downtown. We have preserved our beautiful old trees and learned to live
with and sometimes enjoy the passing trains. The proposed change in
zoning threatens the character of our neighborhood. The change would
decrease property values, cause people to be less likely to invest in
maintaining and renovating their fine old houses, lead people to look
elsewhere for a family home. We are a thriving neighborhood. Please do
not undermine our efforts to keep the center of town a place for families.
The city should be working to replicate the success of our mixed
neighborhood, not undermine it. Please designate RL as the zoning for the
Brookside Neighborhood.
