SUBJECT: Change to the Ames Municipal Code, Chapter 21, Plumbing Code.
BACKGROUND:
In the past, the plumbing inspector took the authority to approve applications for reciprocal
plumbing licenses when they were clearly acceptable regarding City of Ames plumbing
license requirements. The Plumbing Code Board of Appeals would only review those
applications that were marginal.
It was pointed out that our plumbing inspector did not technically have that authority and
that the plumbing board had to approve eve application. The Board has done this for
several months causing unnecessary time delays for contractors trying to complete
construction projects as well as not using our board members' or staffs time adequately.
Therefore, the Plumbing Code Board of Appeals voted 3-0 to have the ordinance changed
to allow for the application approval to be handled by the plumbing inspector. The
Plumbing Code Board of Appeals must still approve all questionable applications.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Refer the proposed change to the City Attorney to draft a change to the Municipal
Plumbing Code.
2. Deny the request.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative#1 and
refer this proposal to the City Attorney to draft a change to the Municipal Plumbing Code.
