Members of the Mechanical Code Board of Appeals and the Board of Plumbing Examiners and
Appeals:
Thank you for your recent letter expressing both Boards' feelings regarding code enforcement policies
for the City's Inspections Division. Both Boards evidently feel that City staff has not been vigorous
enough in prosecuting past code violations.
Rather than spend time and emotion criticizing individual staff members or in second-guessing past
decisions,I instead invite you to take the proactive step of proposing whatever enforcement policy you
feel would best serve our community's interests. Your proposal should be sent to the City Council
members who will presumably refer it to the City Manager for staff analysis and recommendation.
After appropriate review and discussion, the Council will then make a final decision regarding the type
and level of code enforcement policy which is undertaken.
I appreciate the effort you devote as voluntary Board members and as close observers of the code
enforcement process. Since the Inspections staff works for the City Manager, who is ultimately
accountable to the City Council for carrying out their ordinances and policies, the approach I have
outlined will do the best job of providing you with an avenue for recommending a policy change while
respecting the roles of everyone involved.
Yours truly,
