SUBJECT: Mechanical Licenses
Currently, the City Clerk's Office is responsible for processing applications for plumbers' and
electricians' licenses. There were 317 plumbers' licenses renewed for 1999-2001, and we anticipate that
there will be approximately 250 electricians' licenses renewing for 2000-2002.
As you know, at their meeting of April 13, 1999, the City Council passed a motion requesting that the
City Attorney draft an amendment to the Mechanical Code to include requirements for mechanical
licenses. Per the Council Action Form, you are recommending that mechanical contractors be given two
years to comply, rather than be grandfathered. I assume that mechanical licenses would be valid for three
years as are the licenses for the other trades. The renewal processes would be most manageable for the
City Clerk's Office if the cycles proposed below would be followed.
Plumbers: Valid January 1, 1999, thru December 31, 2001
Electricians: Valid January 1, 2000, thru December 31, 2002
Mechanical: Valid January 1, 2001, thru December 31, 2003
Since the Inspections Division is also obviously impacted by this change, I would appreciate the
opportunity to discuss the particulars before the process is finalized.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
