The City of Ames has adopted the 1994 Uniform Mechanical Code which already has in place the safety and industry standards for the installation, alteration, and repair of mechanical equipment This existing code used by the City of Ames is updated every three years. Under the existing Mechanical Code, the City has required the registration of the mechanical shops. These registered shops are required to take out the mechanical permits for mechanical work performed in the City of Ames. The City Inspection Department, after a permit has been issued, inspects the job to see that the installation meets or exceeds the Uniform Mechanical Code. If there is a problem with the inspection, the City of Ames Inspection Department will contact the registered mechanical shop for correction and re-inspection In our opinion, the City should not require licensing of apprentices or journeyman mechanical workers. The shops should be responsible for the work that is being done. The individual apprentice or journeyman is only following the instructions of the shops they are working for. These people should not be subject to fines and revocation of licenses for work they have no control over. If this proposed ordinance is passed by you, it will be just one more step towards bigger government If this proposed ordinance is passed,it will have a negative effect on the City budget If the City of Ames is going to require the mechanical people to be licensed, then it would only stand to reason that the City of Ames would have to hire qualified licensed staff to inspect the work We simply ask that you not rush into this proposed ordinance without careful study of all the issues effecting this issue. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
