CITY CLERK
FROM: John R. Klaus, City Attorne CITY OF AMES,IOWA
DATE: September 15, 1999
SUBJECT: Mechanical Code, Licensing
This is to follow-up on our meeting of this morning. You asked, in response to a letter from the
members of the Plumbing and Mechanical Boards, that I refresh your memory as to what has
transpired relative to an ordinance to establish licensing with respect to the City's Mechanical Code.
Attached is a copy of the April 21, 1999 memo to you and Jeff Pearson with a first draft of the
proposed ordinance.
My calendar shows that on May 24, 1999 you, Jeff Pearson, Diane Voss and I met in the Legal
Department conference room to discuss the ordinance. Comparisons were made between what was
proposed by members of the Mechanical Board and what had been established with respect to
licensing of plumbers and electricians. It is my recollection that Jeff Pearson said he wanted to
review the ordinance further and would get back to us with clarification on how the licensing process
for mechanical work might be implemented in a manner consistent with both the concerns of the
Mechanical Board and concerns related to administrative issues.
