A006 - Petition to adopt Outdoor Lighting Code
Ames Outdoor Lighting Code Petition We, the undersigned, petition the City of Ames staff and the Ames City Council to amend the city zoning ordinance and to adopt an Outdoor Lighting Code for Ames. We support an effective and comprehensive outdoor lighting ordinance for the city of Ames. We think all business, residential, and community lighting should be installed with the idea of being a"good neighbor,"by keeping unnecessary direct light from shining onto adjacent properties or streets. Toward this end, we support the use of light fixtures that minimize obtrusive glare and keep light on the ground where it is needed. To provide adequate but not excessive light, we support setting maximum light levels at twice the levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America(IESNA). We feel that everyone will benefit from outdoor lighting that is more attractive and energy-efficient, allows people to see better at night, and enhances the nightscape of Ames in a way that both residents and visitors can appreciate. Ames Outdoor Lighting Code Petition We, the undersigned, petition the City of Ames staff and the Ames City Council to approve and adopt an amendment to the city zoning ordinance to incorporate an Outdoor Lighting Code for the City of Ames. We further request that the City of Ames and the Ames City Council approve and adopt the Outdoor Lighting Code as approved by the City Planning and Zoning Commission during their public meeting on Wednesday, April 7, 1999. We feel that an effective and comprehensive outdoor lighting ordinance is necessary to reduce the problems created by improperly designed and installed outdoor lighting within the corporate limits of the city of Ames. We think that all business, residential, and community driveway, sidewalk, and property lighting should be installed with the idea of being a"good neighbor," by keeping unnecessary direct light from shining onto adjacent properties or streets. Toward this end, we support requiring the use of light fixtures that are designed to minimize obtrusive glare and keep stray light out of the night sky. To curb excessively bright lighting, we also support setting maximum light levels at twice the levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America(IESNA). We feel that everyone will benefit from outdoor lighting that is more attractive and energy-efficient, allows people to see better at night, and enhances the nightscape of Ames in a way that both residents and visitors can appreciate.
