HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Adopting 1999 Edition of NEC, National Electrical Code ORDINANCE NO. 3514 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SECTION 7.101 AND SUBSECTIONS 7.202(1) AND 7.301(1) AND RE-ENACTING SAID SECTION AND SUBSECTIONS REVISED FOR THE PURPOSES OF ADOPTING THE 1999 EDITION OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE BY REFERENCE,WITH AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS; REPEALING ANY AND ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT; PROVIDING A PENALTY; AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT ENACTED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa, that: Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by repealing Section 7.101 and Subsections 7.202(1)and 7.301(1)and re-enacting the same revised to state as follows: "Sec. 7.101. ELECTRICAL RULES AND REGULATIONS. (1) The 1999 National Electrical Code as published by the National Fire Protection Association,Quincy, Massachusetts, is hereby adopted as the electrical code of the City of Ames and shall govern electrical work and installations in the City of Ames, except for such specific, higher standards and requirements as have been or may from time to time be enacted by the city of Ames. Violations of the standards of said rules, or failure to comply with the provisions of said rules shall, when occurring within the jurisdiction of the City of Ames constitute an offense against the City of Ames. (2) The said National Electrical Code is amended by adding to Sec. 250-50, Grounding Electrode Conductor Installation, the following as Subsection(e): (e) Grounding Where Plastic Water Pipe is Installed. When plastic water pipe is installed, a plaque or sign shall be installed on the electrical panel to warn the electrician, and the electrician shall then ground by means other than the water service. (3) Section 336-4 of the said National Electrical Code is amended by substituting for the first five lines thereof, the following: `Type NM, Type NMC and Type NMS cables shall be permitted to be used in: (i)one-family dwellings and associated accessory buildings, (ii) two-family dwellings and associated accessory buildings, (iii)multi-family dwellings and associated accessory buildings. All other structures shall be wired using other methods as allowed by the National Electrical Code.' Sec. 7.202. INSPECTION, TESTS AND ENFORCEMENT. (1) Supervision of the work. Electrical work for which a permit is required by this chapter shall be done only when a journeyman electrician or master electrician is present at the address where that work is being done and that work is done under the direct supervision of such journeyman or master electrician. Sec. 7.301. DEFINITIONS. The following definitions of terms shall be used in the interpretation of the chapter: (1) Apprentice Electrician. An apprentice electrician is a natural person, employed by a registered electrical contractor, who while learning the electrical trade is assisting in the installation, alteration or repair of electrical systems at an address where a journeyman electrician or a master electrician is present and providing direct supervision of the work being done by the apprentice." Scxtion Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a municipal infraction punishable by a fine of$500 for a first offense and $750 for each repeat violation. Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict, if any. Section Four.
