AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF
AMES, IOWA, BY ADDING A NEW SECTION 11.11 TO PROHIBIT THE
KEEPING OF HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES OUTDOORS; PROVIDING A
PENALTY; AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS,it is found that the outdoor storage of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and other large household appliances
presents a threat to the public health and safety and an undesirable sight that detracts from the use and enjoyment of
adjacent property and of the City as a whole; and,
WHEREAS,it is further found that such items,when stored outdoors,can become a harborage for rodents and other wild
animals and birds; can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes; and can pose a safety hazard to children becoming
trapped in them, or injured on them; and,
WHEREAS,it is deemed to be a reasonable measure for the public welfare to prohibit and abate the aforesaid practice,
immediately, whenever its occurrence is brought to the attention of City Code enforcement employees;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa, that:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by
"SEC. 11.11. OUTDOOR STORAGE OF HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND FIXTURES.
Any person who abandons or otherwise leaves unattended any refrigerator, icebox, washing
machine,dishwasher,kitchen range, clothes dryer, freezer, commode, urinal, bathroom sink, kitchen
sink,or other large household appliance,bathroom fixture,kitchen fixture, or similar container, outside
of buildings, or any person who allows such refrigerator, ice box, washing machine, dishwasher,
kitchen range,clothes dryer,freezer,commode,urinal, bathroom sink, kitchen sink, bathroom fixture,
kitchen fixture, or other large household appliance, or similar container, to remain outside of buildings
or premises in the person's possession or control,abandoned or unattended, commits a violation of this
section."
Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a municipal infraction punishable as
set out in Section 1.9 of the Municipal Code.
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of
such conflict, if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as
required by law.
