COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: Proposed Ordinance on the Exercise and Transportation Standards for Wolf
Dog Crosses
BACKGROUND:
Animal Control staff and the Ames Humane League are proposing legislation on the exercise
and transportation standards for wolf dog crosses owned in Ames. Wolf dog crosses are
legislated under the City of Ames' exotic and wild animals ordinance for human health and
safety as well as animal welfare concerns. Presently there are no allowances for walking
and/or transporting such animals except for outside the city limits. The animals may be kept
in a locked residence and/or an outside enclosure if regulations are met. Information and
education about wolf dog crosses reveals that these animals are not ordinary dogs, and
although tame, they are not domesticated. There are no known rabies shots for such
animals.
The attached proposed legislation is the result of considerable research and veterinary input.
Staff feels that it is needed and enforceable.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Adopt proposed ordinance to control the exercise and transportation of wolf dog crosses.
2. Take no action.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1,
approving the proposed ordinance to control the exercise and transportation of wolf dog
crosses.
