Dear Mayor Curtis and Council Members:
On behalf of our client, The Daly Group of Chicago, Illinois, we are requesting
that Section 5.214, subparagraph (4), of the City of Ames sign regulations be amended to
permit "off-premises" signs to be within 300 feet of each other. The current distance re-
quirement for off-premises signs is 350 feet.
As I have mentioned to each of you, this requested amendment is needed in order
to allow the proposed sign for the Staples Store, Cinemark Theaters, and Aldi Food Store
(all contained on a single pylon sign) to be erected within an easement area at the North-
east corner of Lot 2, Block 1, First Addition to Southwood Subdivision. The proposed
sign will be approximately 345 feet distant from the existing K-Mart pylon sign located
on Lot 4 of the subdivision.
We would request that at your meeting on September 23 you refer this matter to
City staff for preparation of a proposed ordinance amendment. We would also request
that you direct City staff to present the proposed ordinance amendment at the next regular
meeting of the City Council scheduled for October 14, 1997.
The proposed amendment would cause Section 5.214, subparagraph (4), of the
sign regulations to state the following:
No person shall have or permit on any premises:
(4) Any off premises sign nearer than three hundred (300) feet radius to any
other off premises sign.
