Dear Harry:
As you know, the City of Ames has been undertaking a project over the past two years
to reconstruct Hyland Avenue from Lincoln Way to Ontario Street. As a part of this
project, the City received an ISTEA Enhancement Grant for$72,000 to include on-street
bike lanes from Ontario Street to West Street.
The presence of the bike lanes in conflict with the existing on-street parking has created
a problem.that now needs to be addressed as we bring the construction to closure and
prepare for normal operations. In your letter of December 6, 1996 you indicated that
the federal funding would be in jeopardy if parking was allowed along the bike lane.
The City Council has set July 22, 1997 as the date to discuss the parking issue and has
requested that I contact you relative to obtaining a written response to the question of
funding status if parking is allowed only on Sunday mornings from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00
noon. I would appreciate it if you could get your response to me by July 17, 1997 so I
can prepare our report to the City Council.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 239-5162. Thanks for your
help in addressing this situation.
Sincerely,
Paul D. Wiegand, P.E.
PDW/dwj Public Works Director
