HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Letter from Janet McKee stating her opposition to parking on Hyland Avenue 619 July 22, 1997 To the attention of the Ames City Council: As a member of the Ames/ISU Bicycle Committee, I regret being out of town for this council meeting. I wish to go on record in absolute opposition to any parking on Hyland Avenue. A lined and signed bike lane should be that and only that, and should not be compromised with the status of part-time motorized vehicle parking area. To do so would create a confusing situation for both motorists and bicyclists and a decidedly dangerous situation for bicyclists. To in any way contract for a parking situation will set a terrible precedent within the City of Ames. In the future, any institution, business or developer would simply try to negotiate the right "price" for what they want in a given situation. Should parking to any degree be allowed on Hyland Avenue, it would be in direct conflict with the terms of the grant from the DOT for the reconstruction project. It is my understanding that the City of Ames would lose approximately $72,000 of grant moneys, and in so doing, would demonstrate that it is certainly not a "bicycle friendly community" or a future trustworthy grant recipient. Should any parking be permitted on Hyland Avenue, I wish to express a strong stand that the bike lane on both sides be abandoned, i.e., not striped or signed as a bike lane. A bike lane should be that exclusively or not at all. Thank you for your consideration of this issue. Respectfully submitted, Janet E. McKee
