HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Memo to Council from Steve Hennager with concerns about placement of city streets to: Ames City Council Aril 18, 1997 ' I 'i '1 N from: Steve Hennager, 1110 Garner Circle / APR 2 I7 9 re: Conceptual Development Plan for Northern Lights Subdivision i -- -Cis CLERK CITY OF AMES,IOWA The placement of the city streets is a concern I have against this Conceptual Development Plan for the Northern Lights Subdivision. The planned off-set intersection of Orion and the main entrance of Cub Foods will adversely affect the traffic on Wheeler Street. This road was a dangerous road for two of my friends. One had a car accident at the corner of Wheeler street and Grand avenue. The other was struck by a car as he was bicycling next to Cub Foods on Wheeler Street. The placement of Orion street 135 feet from the Cub foods driveway and any additional driveways onto Wheeler street may cause dangerous street intersections for this commercial area. Orion street should be matched up with the main entrance to Cub Foods and no driveways should enter Wheeler street from the commercial and residential areas north of Wheeler street . Another concern for this intersection is the pedestrian traffic patterns. Driveways and off-set intersections are dangers for children who may be walking to Northwood elementary school. Scott Logan told the Northwood Parents and Teachers Organization that there would be no more off-set intersections like the one between the North Grand Mall and Wal-mart. The off-set intersection on Wheeler street will be as dangerous if not more so than the 30th street off-set intersection. Our children of Northwood school living west of Grand avenue are increasingly separated from their neighborhood school with no safe walking route. Roy Key avenue is a poor walking route with all the delivery trucks and no residential house# as safe havens.
