HomeMy WebLinkAboutA020 - Memo from City Clerk dated March 25, 1997 with citizen comments r MEMO CITY CLERK'S OFFICE CITY OF AMES TO: Mayor and City Council Members FROM: Sandy Ryan, City Clerk DATE: March 25, 1997 SUBJECT: Single-Family Conservation Overlay District (SFCOD) The City Clerk's Office has received phone calls from citizens requesting we relay the following regarding the proposed SFCOD ordinance(s): 1. A Mr. Hatfield called to say he owns property in the SFCOD, and wants the Council to be informed of the following prior to the vote on this issue: a. He feels strongly the ordinance(s) should be denied. b. He feels any City Council member who owns property in this district should not be allowed to vote and should abstain on this issue. 2. Dorothy Scott said she received the public hearing notice, and wanted the Mayor and Council to know she felt strongly enough about this issue to call long distance from Alamo, Texas. She owns property at 912-14 Grand, and said she was very opposed to the SFCOD. She said the duplex she bought in 1962 was built in the 1950's, and if anything should happen to it, she would like to be able to rebuild. She said her duplex did not detract from the area. Her Ames phone number is 232-6496, and she will be home next week (Her Texas phone number is 210/702-7783.) 3. Richard Swartz, (ph: 232-2918), said he owns property in the SFCOD, and is strongly against the ordinance(s). He said he invested in his property as a long-term investment for his retirement. He said when others buy property in the area, they know what the zoning is before they buy, and the zoning shouldn't be changed to suit their wishes. He said the greatest risk to his investment was the government, and that wasn't right. He also expressed concerns about the lack of affordable housing available to renters in Ames and how the proposed standards such as roof pitch would affect attempts to upgrade or repair his property.
