HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Letter from Kay Wall Kay Wall 1004 Kellogg Ave. January 10, 1996 Regarding moratorium: Al Rabe, Ames' most recent city planning consultant, was hired at the expense of $150, 000 to evaluate the best possible growth plan for Ames. The previouse consultant, for downtown planning, cost $90, 000. Don't you feel land use should remain as they recommended at least until the new Land Use Policy Plan is in place? I do. Without the 6 month extension of the demolition moratorium to finish out the year of planning, Ames can loose another 2. 3 acres of our rich heritage of older homes for the construction of new apartment buildings that are visually intrusive to the appearance of the heart of Ames. I frequently hear, "I just love that neighborhood, " from people who live outside the area. They feel the early streets and houses of this city belong to all of Ames. In recent years the comment, "I just love that neighborhood, " has often been accompanied by an expression of distress at the noticable loss of still another house. Nationwide there is a resergence of interest in old, downtown housing because the homes were built with a quality that can't been duplicated at a reasonable price. With our city's subsidizing of "affordable" housing and new land all around Ames being made available for building, it is unreasonable to offer an opportunity to demolish more houses for the building of apartments before the new land use policy plan is in place. Therefore I request that City Council extend the demolition moratorium for six months.
