AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF
AMES,IOWA,BY REPEALING SUBSECTIONS 21.501(32)AND 21.501(34)
AND ENACTING NEW SUBSECTIONS 21.501(32)AND 21.501(34)FOR THE
PURPOSE OF ADOPTING A NEW POLICY ON PRESSURE REDUCING
VALVES FOR NEW BUILDINGS AND TO ESTABLISH A WATER PRESSURE
RANGE FOR THE CITY; REPEALING ANY AND ALL ORDINANCES OR
PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH
CONFLICT;PROVIDING A PENALTY;AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
BE IT ENACTED,by the City Council for the City of Ames,Iowa,that:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by
repealing Subsections 21.501(32)and 21.501(34)and enacting new Subsections 21.501(32)and 21.501(34)as follows:
"(32) Amend Section 1007 UPC pertaining to Water Pressure as follows:
(b)The first sentence of Section 1007(b)shall read: Where water pressure to a new building
or structure is in excess of eighty(80)pounds per square inch(551.2kPa),an approved type pressure
regulator preceded by an adequate strainer shall be installed and the pressure reduced to eighty(80)
pounds per square inch (551.2lcPa)or less,unless the Building Official is presented with adequate
documentation of the need for higher pressure and waives this requirement in writing.
(e)The first sentence of Section 1007(e)shall read: Relief valves located inside a building
shall be provided with a drain,not smaller than the relief valve outlet,of galvanized steel or hard drawn
copper or CPVC piping and fittings and shall not extend from the valve to the outside of the building.
(34) Amend Section 1009(h)UPC by adding a second paragraph as follows:
An assumed pressure range of 46-60 psi will be used for Table 10-2,except that in the area
of the city south of Lincoln Way and west of Dotson Drive,the assumed pressure range will be 30-45
psi."
Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a municipal infraction punishable as
set out in Section 1.9 of the Municipal Code.
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such
conflict,if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as
required by law.
