Box 8 1 1 Ames, IA 50010 Dear City Planners: Thank you for your letter informing us of the meeting May 23. We cannot attend because of graduation but we would like you to know we support the demolition moratorium. We would like to keep the area as duplexes and single family homes instead of large structures that do not fit the neighborhood. We would like homes to be repaired and well maintained rather than torn down. Sincerely, Len & Bernadette Siebert Owners of property at 921 Burnett RECEIVED P,9AY 2 CITY OF AMES,IOWA DEPT.OF PLANNING&HOUSING May 23, 19V6 De em. o l.Lcmn,&7.g S Houz ing l . U. O. Box 811 Ames, Iowa 50010 Ref. Proposed demolition moratorium overlay District in letter of May 17, 1996. We own the duplex at 918 - 920 Duff; this unit was built new and put in service in February 1993. This unit is inside the proposed demolition moratorium_ Why is 918-920 Duff in a moratorium overlay? We strongly oppose this! Is the real agenda to place the proposed overlay moratorium area under the jurisdiction of the Ames Historic Preservation Commission? Old Town is a fine looking area and is great for those who want to participate, but as an existing property owner outside of Old Town, in no way do we want any part of these restrictions . R pectfully, Ed and Jean Stout May 23, 1996 To: City of Ames Planning & Zoning Commission Members Paula Weidner Stacy Joiner Charles DeKovic Murray Blackwelder Emil Peterson Steiner Silence Riad Mahayni Re: Legal Notice - City of Ames Demolition Moratorium - Overlay District Dear Members: With reference to the zoning regulation for the demolition moratorium overlay district and legal notice from Sandra L. Ryan, City Clerk, please be advised that as property owners in this area we are against any moratorium on demolition for the following reasons: 1. This overlay exceeds the historical district area which already has very strict regulations. 2. It takes away the right of individuals outside this historical district that are operating under the present rules & regulations. (continued on Page 2) Page 2 of letter to City of Ames Planning & Zoning Committee Members May 23, 1996 3. This moratorium could be setting a precedence for other areas in the city of Ames which could have an impact in the disruption of running the city. In summary, I hope your recommendation is to get rid of this moratorium as soon as possible and preserve the rights of others until the laws and rules or regulations are changed through the proper channels and through the proper processes of changing rules and regulations. Thank you Sincerely Harold Pike 2715 Valley View Road Ames, Iowa 50014 MAY 2 8 1996 CITY CLERK CITY OF AMES,IONlA May 24, 1996 City of Ames 515 Clark Ames, Iowa 50010 Att: Sandra L. Ryan City Clerk Re: Legal Notice - City of Ames Demolition Moratorium - Overlay District Dear Ms. Ryan: With reference to your public notice we received today concerning proposed zoning regulations for the demolition moratorium, please be advised that as property owners in the area in question, we are against this proposal. A few months ago, an issue came up in this area between the residents and the landlords and the issue was resolved by the City Council to wait for the LUPP to be developed and put into place. This to date has not been done. There already is an historic district in place. We don't believe this historic districts zoning requirements need to be expanded into the surrounding area currently being discussed. I appreciate certain individuals concerns, but no one person or group of persons should be able to change zoning regulations in a short period of time because they feel it is in their best interest. (Continued on Page 2) Page 2 of letter to City of Ames May 24, 1996 In summary, let the LUPP be set up and used as a guide line so that issues like this do not have to be brought up every 6 months to a year. Thank you Sincerely l Harold Pike 2715 Valley View Road Ames, Iowa 50014 Q r May 23, 1996 MAY 2 81996 G Ames City Council CITY CLERK CITY OF AMES,IOWA Dear Council, We are writing to express our support for the R2 resolution that is being considered. We recently bought and renovated an older home near the Old Town area. We did this partly because we value and want to preserve beautiful, old homes. As we're getting to know others who have children in the Roosevelt district we hear many of them express a similar motivation for living in this area of town. They also express their fear about the apartment homes that are moving onto their streets. People who are preserving Ames' heritage should not have to live with this uncertainty! The letter to the editor in a recent .Ames Ti-i&unewas right on target. How crazy it would be to pour many resources into developing a village concept on the Taylor farm subdivision at the same time that the original village of Ames is not allowed to remain the lovely, convenient neighborhood it is. By protecting the Old Town area, you will preserve affordable housing for families and help prevent urban sprawl. We hope that the Council will take our views seriously. Thank you for your time and consideration, Sincerely, Dr. Tom and Allison Greenwald 839 Brookridge Ames, I 50010 Ph. 232-0178
