SUBJECT: Request approval for changes in Chapter 13, of the Ames Municipal Code
regarding adoption of revisions to the local rental housing code.
BACKGROUND:
On January 23, 1996, the Housing Code Board of Appeals and city staff held a workshop with
the City Council on the proposed rental housing code changes.
During the workshop the list of changes was scaled down from 26 proposals to 17. These
proposed changes represented those areas which are in direct conflict with our local building,
electrical, plumbing, mechanical and fire codes which were updated on April 1, 1993, or are
significant improvements in life safety for the tenants.
Since the workshop, we have sent the attached letter and summary to all operators of rental
properties in Ames, Iowa.
The Housing Code Board of Appeals recommends the adoption of all 17 changes be
approved and ask the City Council to direct the City Attorney to draft an ordinance including
these proposed changes.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance including all the proposed changes.
2. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance to adopt any combination of the 17
changes.
3. Deny the request.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1
directing the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance approving all the proposed changes.
