SUBJECT: Request Approval for Changes in Chapter 5 of the Ames Municipal Code Regarding
Adoption of the 1994 Uniform Building Code and Local Amendments.
BACKGROUND:
On February 27, 1996, the City Council directed the City Attorney to prepare a revised
ordinance adopting the 1994 Uniform Building Code with local renumbering changes and the
following three additional local amendments:
1. Show progress every 60 days once a job is started.
2. Install an egress window in every new house in the basement.
3. Require perimeter footings for all structures including wood pole structures.
Since the February 27, 1996, meeting, one contractor has informed the Building Code Board
of Appeals that he had not received any notice of the two public hearings held in January. The
Board has verified with the inspection staff that all registered builders were sent two notices.
No other contractor has complained about not receiving notices nor about the proposed
changes since February 27, 1996. Therefore, the Building Code Board of Appeals request
the City Council approve the revisions to Chapter 5 of the Ames Municipal Code as attached.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve the proposed revisions to Chapter 5 of the Ames Municipal Code.
2. Deny the request.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1
approving the revised ordinance.
