HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Revising Plumbing Code regarding Backwater Valves in Sanitary Sewer Services ORDINANCE NO.3365 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SUBSECTION 21.501(20) AND RE- ENACTING A NEW SUBSECTION 21.501(20) FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING INSTALLATION OF BACKWATER VALVES SUBJECT TO DETERMINATION BY LOCAL AUTHORITY;REPEALING ANY AND ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT;PROVIDING A PENALTY;AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT ENACTED,by the City Council for the City of Ames,Iowa,that: Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames,Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by repealing Subsection 21.501(20)as it now exists and enacting a new Subsection 21.501(20)as follows: "(20) Amend Section 409 UPC by adding an exception to Subsection 409(a) and adding new subsection(m)as follows: 409(a) Drainage piping serving fixtures which have flood level rims located below the elevation of the next upstream manhole cover of the public sewer serving such drainage piping shall be protected from backflow of sewage by installing an approved type backwater valve. Fixtures above such elevation shall not discharge through the backwater valve. Exception: The requirements of 409(a) shall apply only when it is determined necessary by the administrative authority based on local conditions. (m) In buildings,a 3"floor drain shall be installed on the lowest floor. Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a municipal infraction punishable as set out in Section 1.9 of the Municipal Code. Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict,if any. Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as required by law. Passed this 9th day of January , 1996.
