HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated October 11, 1994 Ite it Date: October 1 fit 1994 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: PARKING PROHIBITIONS ON SOUTH SIXTEENTH STREET BACKGROUND: Due to the traffic volume increases generated by the K-Mart and other developments on Buckeye Avenue and South Sixteenth Street, staff believes that parking prohibitions should be designated on the south side of South Sixteenth Street from South Kellogg Avenue to 100 feet east of the Mulberry Boulevard intersection. Currently, parking is prohibited on South Sixteenth Street along the north side from Elwood Drive to South Duff Avenue, and on the south side from South Duff Avenue to South Kellogg Avenue. This measure would extend the parking prohibitions along the south side of South Sixteenth Street east of South Kellogg Avenue. By implementing this measure, safety would be enhanced since it would eliminate potential conflicts caused by parked vehicles. Also, it would improve capacity since it would provide a four-lane traffic flow on the 670' street west of South Kellogg Avenue. Currently, the west 670' street section is designed and marked for four lanes of traffic. Attached is a diagram showing the proposed parking prohibitions on South Sixteenth Street. By designating this proposed parking prohibition along this section of South Sixteenth Street, parking would only be permitted on the south side of South Sixteenth Street along a section adjacent to the Old Orchard Mobile Home Park. Staff believes that parking can remain by the Old Orchard Mobile Home Park since the street is not widened fully to four lanes on both sides of the Park, and no problems have been caused by the presence of parking along this two lane facility. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Prohibit parking on the south side of South Sixteenth Street from South Kellogg Avenue to 100' east of Mulberry Boulevard. 2. Modify the proposed parking prohibition by either extending or reducing it. 3. Do nothing. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It i;3 the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1, thereby directing the City Attorney to draft an ordinance prohibiting parking on the south side of South Sixteenth Street from South Kellogg Avenue to 100' east of Mulberry Boulevard.
