AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF
AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SUBSECTION 5.226(2) AND RE-ENACT-
ING SAID SUBSECTION AND ENACTING A NEW SUBSECTION 5.226(3)
FOR THE PURPOSE OF REVISING REGULATIONS ON TIME ALLOWED
FOR DISPLAY OF TEMPORARY SIGNS; REPEALING ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT; PROVIDING A PENALTY; AND ESTABLISHING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa is hereby amend-
ed by repealing Subsection 5.226(2) and re-enacting said Subsection and enacting
a new Subsection 5.226(3) , all as follows:
"(2) Advertising permitted. Advertisement or announcements contained
on any temporary and/or portable sign shall pertain only to civic,
political, religious, fraternal or other non-profit activities.
Temporary or portable signs for the purpose of commercial adver-
tising are prohibited, except for announcements of special one-time
sales or one-time events or occurrences.
(3) Except for those temporary signs and banners affixed to city light
and utility poles with the permission of the City, no temporary or
portable sign shall be displayed longer than fifteen (15) consecu-
tive days, except that political campaign signs and signs pertain-
ing to any election or ballot issue in an election may be displayed
any length of time but shall be removed by the person in posses-
sion and control of the property on which they are displayed, not
later than seven days following the election to which said signs
pertain."
Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute
a municipal infraction, punishable as set out in Section 1 .9, Ames Municipal Code.
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith
shall be repealed to the extent of such conflict if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage and publication as required by law.
