A004 - Letters in support of prohibiting nude dancing
MAR-08-1994 12:57 FROM BRENTON EANK CAP.SG. DSM, TO 39532551529620723959 P.01 %st•It"brand tax transmittal memo 7671 a or Pa9•s ► 1 To ✓ ; Sr r Co. Cu March 3, 1994 Dept. Phone 3 Ames Daily Tribune Fax 0 zzs? — 4S'3oZs 5th Street Ames, Iowa 50olo Open Letter to the City Council; I am writing you in response to a recent article on all nude dancing at a local business. Over the past 10 years I have had the privilege of working with several of you on community projects including City Commissions, Service Club and Chamber of Commerce projects. In every undertaking, I am impressed with the amount of work, sacrifice and planning required to make good things happen in a community. I would now like to urge each of you on the Council - who are already working hard for the benefit of Ames - to commit yourselves to limiting or preferably eliminating these sorts of businesses in Ames. All of you with families know full well the difficulty of maintaining an intact family. You are uniquely aware of the devastating social impact of crumbling family structures as you are forced to provide funding for police protection, judicial processes and social programs. All our efforts at social programing pale in comparison to the effectiveness of healthy, loving families. Lets stop pretending that businesses who portray women as toys for male gratification, not only degrade the women involved, but wrongfully captivate and degrade the men as well and by extension present and future families are weakened. We do our young people and our community a terrible disservice to fail to limit such activity for fear of "free speech" arguments. A few women will dance naked for money and a few businesses will profit from such activity. A much larger portion of the community will pay far more than money for the benefit of a few. This is an issue of "freedom of enterprise" and not freedom of speech. Additionally, we should not be surprised at reports of prostitution or illicite sex in connection with such business. Everyone knows that visual stimulus is a powerful male aphrodisiac. Our freedoms and strength can only be maintained in society by self control and limitation of our natural urges. Please do not permit unrestrained enterprise to compromise all else that 's good about our community. Curtis 515 Clark Avenue Ames, Iowa 50010 3/13/94 Dear Councilmen and Mayor, As citizens of Ames and parents of three children we are distressed to learn of the activities of the Big Earl 's Goldmine juice bar . When behaviors such as nude dancing are permitted in a community it reflects poorly not only on its businesses but also upon its citizens . High school children are frequently seen at the bar . What is to say that younger children are not also going there? There are laws to prevent minors from purchasing photographs of nudity, why are there none to prevent them from going to a business and viewing it? We are concerned that the moral fabric of the Ames community is at stake. We had hoped that a small mid- western town would not have the corruption so common in larger cities . Once an establishment such as Earl ' s Goldmine becomes accepted in a community others are sure to follow. Our families need to be protected . We would ask that you consider passing laws to prohibit such establishments from infiltrating our community. At the very least, prohibit minors from participating in or frequenting them. To idly stand by and do nothing is the same as giving your endorsement . Truly eSAe d, Dail and Maria Pringle 1908 Clark Avenue Ames, Iowa 50010 FILED. March 13, 1994 MAR 1 71994 1 CITY CLERK CITY OF AMES,IOWA To Ames City Council: I wanted to write to express my disgust at Big Earls. I hope that you as the City Council will vote to ban any kind of dance that fosters women as sex objects. Just because this establishment doesn't serve alcoholic drinks should not be reason to allow this type of prurient behavior. I believe that when we allow this type of establishment, we also invite the crimes associated with it, violence towards women, prostitution, and the like. In this generation where sexually transmitted disease is rampant, any allowance for a place that promotes it under the guise of"free speech" ought to be shouted down. We recently moved to Ames and one of the things we wanted was the family atmosphere available here. We love the city and the stands that have been taken to support family values. I hope that you will consider this in any vote or decision you make regarding Big Earls. Cordially, l Steve Taylor 1619 Wheeler Drive Ames, Iowa 50010 Pam, 1505 Curtiss Ames, Iowa 50010 March 17 FILED Mayor Larry Curtis 515 Clark Ave. ,,,,gypp Ames, Iowa 50010 1 R 2 11994 Dear Mayor Curtis: L—a-i cLERK-1 CITY Of AMES, IOWA We are writing to make our opinions known concerning the continued operation of Big Earl's Too in Ames featuring nude female dancers. We object strongly to this type of establishment in the city and the widespread advertizement and publicity that it is accorded. These activities are counter to up holding positive family values. We strongly urge you to use the means necessary to close this establishment. We do not approve of any so called "adult entertainment" in the city, but take strong exception to Big Earl's Too because of the low age requirement for admittance and because of it's aggressive advertisement that causes this undesirable message to come into each home that receives the newspaper where it can attract the prudent interest of young minds. We encourage you and the city council to be aggressive so that this establishment is closed or that nude dancing is not allowed. FILED May 20, 1994 p CITY CLLRs<. CITY OF AMES, IOWA CITY CLERK Dear Council Members, CITY OF AM%IowA I am writing this letter as a parent and concerned citizen. As recent transplants to your fine city, my wife and I have been pleased with the character and beauty which thrives in this community. However, while on a shopping trip, we were disappointed to see a nude establishment in such an upstanding community, so close to decent places of business. It is a blemish on an otherwise outstanding place and I would ask that the council take action to rid us of such demeaning and degrading businesses. As a lifetime resident of California, I have learned first hand the meaning of urban decay. I have witnessed as communities have gone from thriving to devastation, in the matter of a few years. The reality is that no town is exempt from this decay and unless stands are taken, moral deterioration will surely result. I am also concerned that the legal loopholes allow young people to participate because it is considered a "juice bar". As a scout leader, I find it contaradictory to ask my young scouts to seek higher values, while we stand by and allow this type of smut to be available. I think we owe it to our future leaders to take a stand against Big Earl's, As a member of this community, you have my full support. I stand ready to assist you in any way I can. Thank you for your time and attention. We all appreciate the importance of the work you do. Sincerely, C.
