BACKGROUND: Chapter 32 of the Ames Municipal Code has adopted the 1991 Uniform Mechanical Code, however because of rapidly changing technology in mechanical systems, the Mechanical Board of Appeals would like to have the following paragraph of Sec. 901 of the Mechanical Code which now reads: "Gas venting systems serving appliances equipped with draft hoods and appliances listed for use with Type B vents may be designed in accordance with tables in Appendix C, Chapter 9, when the design method has been approved by the building official." to be changed to read as follows: "Gas venting systems serving appliances equipped with draft hoods and appliances listed for use with Type B vents may be designed in accordance with the Gas Appliance Manufacturer's Assn. Venting Tables supplied by the manufacturer of the appliance or with Tables in Appendix C, Chapter 9, when the design method has been approved by the Building Official or Mechanical Inspector." The attached ordinance was prepared with the change and some renumbering also occurred to clean up the Mechanical Code. The mechanical contractors in Ames asked the Mechanical Board of Appeals to change the code concerning the venting tables. It will allow greater flexibility in the installation of mechanical venting systems for furnaces and water heaters. The venting tables that come with the manufacturers instructions allow alternative methods for achieving the end goal, which is to vent the gases and eliminate carbon monoxide buildup in the buildings. The mechanical board voted unanimously for this change. They received additional support from the Plumbing Board of Appeals and the Building Board of Appeals. The Board held a public hearing on this change on February 21, 1994 and found no opposition. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Approve changes as submitted for your consideration. 2. Deny the request. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1 granting the submitted changes. COUNCIL ACTION:
