SUBJECT: Additions to Chapter III (Animal Control) of the Ames Municipal
Code
BACKGROUND:
Animal Shelter personnel have recently encountered situations involving the
care of crocodiles and their allies (other members of the crocodile family) .
The care of such animals falls under the Exotic Pet Ordinance; however,
security and housing requirements are not specified that would help ensure
the animals' well-being as well as the safety of others.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to draft changes in the animal control
ordinance to specify security requirements for crocodiles and their
allies.
2. Take no action.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the City Manager's recommendation that the City Council adopt
Alternative 1 and direct the City Attorney to draft changes in the animal
control ordinances that would specify security requirements for crocodiles
and their allies. This change is needed to ensure the well-being of the
animals and the safety of Ames citizens.
