HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Letter dated October 21, 1993 to Residents - Snow route designations Public Works Department 515 Clark Avenue 515-239-5160 October 21, 1993 Dear Residents: Re: Snow Route Designations The City Traffic Division is currently evaluating City streets for"Snow Route" designations due to complaints and problems experienced in the past. These "snow routes" are streets that are given a priority for snow removal after snow storms. Included on this list of streets that are being considered for a "snow route" designation is one where you currently reside. This street is being considered since it's a location where problems with snow removal have been experienced, and it meets the general criteria for being a snow route. Streets with snow route designations either have moderate to heavy traffic volumes, collector street status, untypical street conditions, or are on Cy-ride routes. Listed below are streets that staff is currently considering to add to the system. Hoover Avenue - 24th Street to 30th Street Hayes Avenue - 20th Street to 24th Street Oakland Street - Franklin Avenue to Hyland Avenue Hyland Avenue - West Street to Lincoln Way South Walnut Avenue - Lincoln Way to South 5th Street S.E. 5th Street - South Duff Avenue east to the east end of South 5th Street Staff is currently evaluating these routes since problems have been experienced in the past due to the presence of parked vehicles. When parking is present on these streets during snow removal activities, accumulations remain near these vehicles and contribute to hazardous conditions for vehicular and bus traffic. This problem is alleviated on streets designated as snow routes, since vehicles are moved when the street is plowed. With this designation, vehicles must be moved only when a "snow emergency" is declared, and until the street is cleared. This measure ensures that snow would be adequately removed from the street after storms. In order to evaluate this measure, staff would like to receive input from property owners along these proposed snow routes. Please contact me at 239-5275 if you have a concern or need additional information about this measure. Staff is anticipating that this measure will be presented to City Council during their October 26th meeting. Sincerely Scott L/an, P.E. Traffic Engineer
