HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Letter dated August 5, 1993 form Edwards Elementary School to Traffic Engineer Edwards Elementary School DATE: August 5, 1993 TO: Scott Logan, Traffic Engineer FROM: Ron Meals, Principal Z RE: School Bus Loading Zone Earlier this summer I meet with John Grzywacz of Central Iowa Transit and discussed with him possible changes in the bus loading and unloading zone here at Edwards School. I had read the correspondence between the two of you regarding this matter, and provided John with the background and procedures at Edwards for the traffic of students entering and leaving the building, whether they walk to and from school, are provided rides by adults, or ride a school bus. At this point the change I am recommending for this coming school year here at Edwards regarding loading and unloading of school buses is as follows: a. That the bus loading zone remain on the east side of the building along Westwood Drive. This is currently marked with thE? street curb painted yellow. b. That this bus loading zone be extended a greater distance to the south along Westwood to the second parking lot driveway. This would require the street curb to be painted yellow to indicate no parking before, during, and after school hours. c. That a third "No parking - school bus loading zone" sign be placed along by the extended, newly painted no parking zone south of the present loading zone area. Creating a longer bus loading zone length will provide a safer environment for children, especially after the school day when traffic (both student and parent) is rather dense and concentrated. I am enclosing with this letter a map of the Edwards School area indicating both Woodland Street to the north of the school and Westwood Drive on the East Side. Also indicated with a yellow marker is the present location of the bus loading zone, and where I am recommending the extension of this area. I am requesting that these changes be made prior of the start of the school year which takes place on Monday, August 30. John is aware that I will be contacting you about these recommendations. Of course, I will be responsible for communicating with staff and parents about these changes and why they are necessary. Please contact me if you have questions or need further information about the matter. cc: John Grzywacz, Central Iowa Transit Joe Stratton, Business Manager - Ames Comminity Schools 3622 Woodland Avenue • Ames, Iowa 50010 • Phone 515/292-1033 QPrinted on recycled paper An Equal Opportunity Employer
