HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Mechanical Code Changes MECHANICAL CODE CHANGES
The Mechanical Code was reviewed by the Interim Building Code Board of
Appeals with the help of Ken Bergeson, Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector; Jim
Linder, Scott Stephan, Monte Gibbs, and Jerry Redman who are mechanical
contractors in Ames. We wish to thank the board members, as well as, those
on the sub-board for their participation.
The Interim Building Code Board of Appeals has recommended the development
of a Mechanical Board of Appeals by June 1, 1993. The mechanical
contractors have several issues to discuss, such as, possible licensing,
examinations, etc. which do not pertain to persons on the Building Code
Board so the Board felt that these issues would best be handled in similar
circumstances as the plumbing and electrical boards.
The following changes were made to the Mechanical Code:
All reference numbers to the 1988 UMC were changed to the 1991 UMC.
All reference to Building Official was changed to Mechanical Inspector.
Sec. 32.103
Was changed to create the Mechanical Board of Appeals similar to
electrical and plumbing boards and includes a member ex-officio from the
Building Code Board of Appeals with no voting power.
Sec. 32.104(1)(b)
The last paragraph had the following sentence added "The mechanical
contractor must come into the inspection office in person each year."
This is to insure identification to help eliminate ghost contractors.
Sec. 32.104(b)(iv)
Was changed by requesting home and work phone numbers on the
registration.
Sec. 32.104(c)(i)
Was changed by adding the exemption for proof of general liability of
$500,000 in lieu of contractors commercial liability insurance, as well as, a
dismissal of state registration if working on own property.
Sec. 32.105(3)
Was changed to read "10,000 square feet or more than one story" in place
of "100,000 cubic feet" to coincide with the Code of Iowa on licensed
engineers.
The staff recommends the Council adopt these changes to Chapter 32 -
Mechanical Code
