HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Letter dated March 17, 1992 from Department of Public Safety STATE OF I TERRY E.BRANSTAD,GOVERNOR DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY PAUL H.WIECK II,COMMISSIONER March 17, 1992 Mr. Mike Flummerfelt 1316 South Duff Ames, Iowa 50010 RE: Comparative Wind Load - Site Built and Manufactured Homes Dear Mike: Manufactured Homes are built to a Federal Construction Standard published and enforced by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) . Under the HUD Standards, Iowa is in Wind Zone 1, which requires a dwelling unit to be designed to a minimum wind load of 15 PSF Horizontal with an uplift of 9 PSF. Site built units would have to meet the Uniform Building Code (UBC) or the One and Two Family Dwelling Code, both are identical for Iowa, depending on the units exposure ("C" Severe-wide open flat terrain and "B" has terrain which protects the unit) . General wind loads for Iowa would require horizontal 25 PSF, uplift 15 PSF unless it is engineered to UBC, 1988 Section 2311. Hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact this office if you have concerns. Sincerely, - C. E.
