HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Regulating Intersections Where Turns on a Red Light are Prohibited ORDINANCE NO. 3190 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SUBSECTION 26.18(2)(A) AND SECTION 26.19 AND REENACTING THE SAME TO REGULATE TURNING AT A RED LIGHT; REPEAL- ING ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; ESTABLISH- ING A PENALTY AND SETTING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT ORDAINED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa: Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa is hereby amended by repealing Subsection 26.18(2)(a) and re-enacting the same to read as follows: "(a) A "steady circular red" light means vehicular traffic shall stop. Vehicular traffic shall remain standing until a signal to proceed is shown or vehicular traffic, unless prohibited by a sign, may cautiously enter the intersection to make a right turn from the right lane of traffic or a left turn from a one-way street to a one- way street from the left lane of traffic on a one-way street onto the left most lane of traffic on a one-way street. Turns made under this paragraph shall be made in a manner that does not interfere with other vehicular or pedestrian traffic lawfully using the intersection and drivers shall comply with any posted restrictions. Pedestrian traffic facing a steady circular red light shall not enter the roadway unless the pedestrian can safely cross the roadway without interfering with any vehicular traffic." Section Two. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa is hereby amended by repealing Section 26.19 and re-enacting the same to read as follows: "Sec. 26.19. INTERSECTIONS WHERE TURNS ON RED PRO- HIBITED. It is unlawful for the driver of any vehicle to make a turn at an intersection while facing a steady red traffic control signal if a sign stating "No Turn on Red" is post- ed. This prohibition may be limited to times when children are present by so stating on the signs posted as required." Section Three. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to ex- ceed $100 or by imprisonment for not more than 30 days. Section Four. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith shall be repealed to the extent of such conflict if any. Section Five.
