HomeMy WebLinkAboutA004 - Letter from Dayton Heins - comments on proposed ordinance Ames Public Works 515 Clark Ames IA, 50010 Dayton Heins 404 Garden Rd. Ames IA, 50010 Upon recieving the proposed ordinance we find some potential ` problems. This ordinance does not seem to allow for a compost pile. l know that the city has encouraged homeowners to build and maintain compost piles in order to re-use yard plants. We have used one for about 13 years in Ames. A well managed pile has no problems. The three day limit on storage may not be practical for some due to weather , time restraints and perhaps volume. I would suggest 7 days. This may be a more realistic time frame. Another concern is storage. I know the city stores lawn clippings in an open pile and is allowed by the DNR to collect for two weeks before land application. My definition of storage is where the material is prevented from rotting. Given access to air , water , and microbes for the decomposing process, the material is no longer being stored. If these ideas could be worked into an ordinance I feel that a practical policy could be in place. Dayton Heins
