HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated July 23, 1991 ITEM # DATE July 23, 1991 SUBJECT: Plumbing Apprenticeship BACKGROUND: It is current city practice to license plumbers locally before they may apply for plumbing permits in the City. The current requirements in order to be licensed are: 1. Three years experience as an apprentice plumber. 2. Passage of a written exam. The written examination is currently made up and conducted by our local Board. In an effort to coordinate licensing policy with other central Iowa cities, the Plumbing Board of Examiners has decided to use the Block Test. This is a nationally recognized standard test which other Iowa cities are also adopting. However, to fully coordinate licensing requirements, i.e. , so our licensee will be reciprocated with, we must change our apprenticeship requirement to four years to be in line with the other jurisdictions. As the Council may know, staff plans to bring a major code revision to the Council in the very near future. This change is being brought to the Council as a separate item, however, because of the need to move now in conjunction with our central Iowa sister cities. ALTERNATIVES 1. Approve the request requiring four years apprenticeship. 2. Deny the request. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1 approving four years apprenticeship. COUNCIL ACTION:
