HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated July 23, 1991 ITEM #
DATE July 23, 1991
SUBJECT: Plumbing Apprenticeship
BACKGROUND:
It is current city practice to license plumbers locally before they may apply
for plumbing permits in the City. The current requirements in order to be
licensed are:
1. Three years experience as an apprentice plumber.
2. Passage of a written exam.
The written examination is currently made up and conducted by our local
Board.
In an effort to coordinate licensing policy with other central Iowa cities, the
Plumbing Board of Examiners has decided to use the Block Test. This is a
nationally recognized standard test which other Iowa cities are also adopting.
However, to fully coordinate licensing requirements, i.e. , so our licensee will
be reciprocated with, we must change our apprenticeship requirement to four
years to be in line with the other jurisdictions.
As the Council may know, staff plans to bring a major code revision to the
Council in the very near future. This change is being brought to the
Council as a separate item, however, because of the need to move now in
conjunction with our central Iowa sister cities.
ALTERNATIVES
1. Approve the request requiring four years apprenticeship.
2. Deny the request.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt
Alternative #1 approving four years apprenticeship.
