HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated May 28, 1991 COUNCIL ACTION FORM Item # Date: May 28, 1991 SUBJECT: Pullman Parking Restrictions BACKGROUND: Pullman Street has been recently paved with curbs constructed along a 860 foot section from Dayton Road to Whitney Avenue. It was designed as a 25 foot wide street with parking restrictions planned for both sides as a cost saving measure. According to City standards, the street width in commercial areas must be at least 29 feet wide to allow parking on one side. Because of the narrow street width, staff proposes that parking restrictions be designated on both sides of Pullman from Dayton Road to Whitney Avenue for traffic safety and flow purposes. The Krieg Boys Packaged Ice Company has been notified of this proposed parking ordinance. They do not have concerns about the parking restric- tions. Other properties that abut this street have adequate on-site parking including the City Maintenance and Electrical Distribution facili- ties. The City of Ames Animal Shelter does not now meet the off-street parking requirements. Overflow parking takes place along the street. The current budget provides for a project to construct an addition to the existing facility and provide a larger paved parking lot that will bring the facility in line with current zoning practice with respect to off-street parking. Even with this new parking lot, the peak demand at the Animal Shelter will not be met. Since staff feels it is not appropriate to provide this parking on the street, an alternative bid will be taken on the addition project to provide for 6 new spaces across the street. This lot is located on existing City property presently a part of the Equipment Services and Public Works areas. ALTERNATIVES 1. Designate parking restrictions on both sides of Pullman Street from Dayton to Whitney. 2. Do nothing. 3. Designate parking restrictions on one side of Pullman Street. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt alter- native number 1 and designate parking restrictions on both sides of Pullman Street from Dayton to Whitney.
