HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Letters from residents and businesses in favor of sidewalk cafes 0 FFMAN FILED a [BOO OO D8 F ETTiG_ JUL - 5 CITY CLERK OTY OF AMES•IOWA Mayor and Members of the City Council 6/28/90 515 Clark Ave. Ames,Iowa 50010 Dear Sirs: Hoffman-Rettig Foods has been examining Campustown for a restaurant location. We are pleased to see that one restaurant on Lincoln Way has been allowed to place tables on the sidewalk. In our minds, this greatly contributes to the commercial viability of that block. Lincoln Way suffers because it offers limited parking and only one street side for retail. The 'sidewalk cafe' approach makes the street friendlier, and increases consumer traffic. Should we open an establishment on Lincoln Way, we would like to provide outdoor seating. Our plan would require a minimum of sidewalk space. In particular, we would like to have 3 or 4 small, two-seat tables. The current sidewalk is 12' wide; we would need no more than 5' for tables. These tables • could be placed against the storefront, or against the curb, whichever you deem more appropriate. We would keep strict watch to make sure that no tables or chairs stray beyond their allowed area. I understand that the city policy on this issue has not been finalized. If you are concerned about the empty storefronts and business failure rate on Lincoln Way, I strongly urge you to allow sidewalk tables as a possible solution. Thank you for your consideration, and please let us know how it turns out. Sincerel , Ad Green Hoffman-Rettig Foods Inc., I 1 314 W. Platt St. \/7 P.O. Box 927 . Maquoketa, la. 52060 319.652.5631 3316 Woodland Ames , Iowa 50010 July 10 , 1990 Mayor Larry Curtis and members of th-e Ames city council Dear people , Please do everything possible to encourage innovative businesses such as Claudio Gianello ' s sidewalk cafe . I am in campustown daily and I can report that his cafe has brought a new vitality to the area . I have never seen an occasion when the sidewalk cafe caused any congestion . Sincerely , O)aAAAI Lar y N . L rson • The new establishment, Cafe e6audelaire, located on the corner of Lin olrway and Welch Avenue, has recently come under fire by the City Manager of the ity of Ames. Cafe Beaudelaire is a Brazillian style sidewalk cafe. Sidewalk cafes are. not a new concept. In the United States, Europe, South America and many other countries, sidewalk cafes are commonplace. These establishments are known to bring much income to their surrounding businesses and thus the City revenues are substantially increased. There have been eight citizen complaints against Cafe Beaudelaire stating there is not enough sidewalk space on which to walk. The City of Ames issued a "Trial Permit" to Cafe Beaudelaire with the agreement that there would be at least six feet of sidewalk space on which pedestrians may walk. There are seven feet of open sidewalk space on which people may walk. WHERE IS THE LEGITIMACY OF THESE COMPLAINTS?
