HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Letter dated January 4, 1991 from Douglas Pyle regarding parking on Buckeye Avenue S.DDP SOUTH DUFF DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP January 4, 1991 Mr. Steve Schainker City of Ames Ames, Iowa 50010 Re: Buckeye On-Street Parking Dear Steve: I want you to be aware of the discussions I have had with the Council members regarding my opposition to on-street parking on Buckeye Avenue. I oppose on- street parking on Buckeye primarily because it detracts from the quality we are trying to project for the Southwood Subdivision. I believe that all commercial property owners should provide for their own parking needs. Reliance on the City to provide and maintain parking for commercial business is beyond the duty and responsibility of the City, except in limited cases relating to re- development. I worked with the City staff to develop streets that would preclude on-street parking. The City subdivision code provides that within a commercial development that the minimum roadway width per lane, exclusive of vehicular parking, is 12 feet. It also provides that the minimum allowance for vehicular parking is 8 feet. Buckeye Avenue would have to be 32 feet wide to allow for parking on just one side of the street. The width of the paving on Buckeye exclusive of the curbs is 30 feet. This is 2 feet narrower than the minimum requirement in the City's Subdivision code for a street with parking on only one side. Clearly, there should not be parking on Buckeye for this reason alone. I understand that one possible solution would be to prohibit parking on one side of Buckeye now and 6 months from now prohibit parking on the other side. The rational for this solution would be to provide a period of time for those currently parking on Buckeye to make other arrangements for their parking need. It appears to me that the only people parking on Buckeye are employees of Benson Motor. If Benson needs six months to implement a specific plan to provide parking for their employees, I would favor this solution. If their solution six months from now is simply to park on South Kellogg Avenue, then I believe that on street parking on both sides of Buckeye should be prohibited now.
