I feel this is the only way in which the family atmosphere of the area can be preserved. I choose to take an apartment in a home in this area because of the quiet, peaceful nature of this area. I have lived in other areas in Ames in an apartment building ara have found that they are substantially noisier and traffic seems to be heavier in those areas . Thank you for your time. Sincerely, AIN CC- Tamara Borland 1414 Linden Drive Ames , IA 50010 September 14 , 1990 Planning and Zoning Commission Ames , IA Dear Sirs : My family and I enjoy the bandshell area , especially during the summer concerts . I understand that there is a consideration to rezone the bandshell neighborhood from R3 to R2 . We would like to see this happen . The area is attractive and relatively uncrowded, and has little traffic . Families can bicycle to the park safely . Apartment complexes would desrtoy the character of this historic area which gives visitors a pleasing view of Ames and is enjoyed by many people . Sincerely , Gly and Dagmar Frank ,/Vie CIL zN, 11, r L'.► e- /i• .J 520 Cramford Ames, Iowa 50010 September 16, 1990 Planning and Zoning Commission City Hall Ames, loma 50010 Dear Sir: We understand that serious consideration is being given to a proposal to limit the request for down zoning the 8andshell neighborhood to propertiea on the-west side of Crawford Avenue and those further west. We are owners of a property on the east side of Crawford and one that is large enough to benefit from an R-3 zoning in the future. Nevertheless, we wish to request that the whole 8andshell neighborhood be included in the down zoning to R-2. This is an old neighborhood that has maintained a family atmosphere even though there are' rentals in the neighborhood. The R-2 zoning would insure that this atmosphere will be maintained. Leaving the east end of the neighborhood zoned R-3 we believe mould cause three p/oblems. First, it would increase the congestion already caused by on—street parking of tenants in the few multiple units already present in the neighborhood. Secondly, the most direct route for anyone living on the east end of the Baodshell neighborhood to the downtown area, to campus, and to many other parts of Ames mould he through the west and lower density side of the neighborhood. And finally, we cannot understand the wisdom of zoning the two sides of a street differently. It would be hard to maintain a neighborhood character when the types of building permitted are so different on two sides of the street. Down zoning ooly part of the neiyhborhood will not help maiotain the quality of neighborhood we seek to maintain. We therefore urge that the entirety of the Bandshell neighborhood be zoned R-2. Sincerely yours, — — 223 East 6th Street - Ames , Iowa 50010 September 14 , 1990 Planning and Zoning Commission City of Ames 515 Clark Avenue Ames , Iowa 50010 Dear Commission Members : As members of the Bandshell Neighborhood Association central committee , we are writing to express our personal views concerning an R-2 zoning for our neighborhood. We moved into this area as renters in 1973 , bought our house in this area a year later , and for the past sixteen years have raised our family here. When we purchased our home , we did not realize what the zoning was and did not fully understand the possibilities that existed for apartment building development. We purchased our home because it was affordable and the rent from the upstairs apartment helped with the payments . We have since converted our Victorian home back to single family and have enjoyed the space it provides . Over the years , we have been involved in issues concerning neighborhood blight , noise , traffic , air polution , playground equipment , and land use . We have worked hard to make this area a good place to live . In making this rezoning request , we are not attempting to eliminate multi-unit properties from our area . We certainly expect the existing ones to remain and we welcome those renters . What we want to do is maintain the balance that currently exists between the low density and medium density properties . We hope to make the area more attractive as a place to buy single family homes as well as a place to have well maintained multi-unit properties . We want a stable , well-balanced, mixed-use neighborhood. The area on the east side of Crawford Avenue and the area along East 6th Street east of Crawford Avenue are integral parts of the Bandshell Neighborhood. The character of those areas is very similar to the rest of the neighborhood. We feel very strongly that those areas should be included in the R-2 rezoning. We want the citizens of Ames to have pride in the Bandshell Neighborhood, as we already do. The trend has slowly been shifting back toward families in this area. Over 90% of the property owners that live in the area want an R-2 zoning. Please give us a chance to show Ames what a truly pleasant neighborhood the area can again become . Support an R-2 zoning for the Bandshell Neighborhood. Thank you for your consideration. IDS, I071A 50010-6329 Seutimb-r 11 , 1990 Ames Planniag and Zoning Commission City of Ames Ames , Iowa 50010 Dear Commission Member: Prior to purchasing a house at 511 Crawford Ave. in 1975 and moving to that address in 1976 and afterward, city officials made verbal statements to us about the philosophy of blight reduction in the neighborhood and an effort to provide direction conducive to family homes in the neighborhood. The city has taken some leadership by removing at least three deteriorated buildings, removing a car ir:ipounding ln-r- and replacing them with a partially underground water retention tower with landscaping and a green area, a hardsurface and landscaped parking lot, a landscaped aad maintained green space buffer lot, a new City E1^ctri.c Plan, Office Building, new facial treatment to the 1,7,ter Plant office building and resurfacing of -6 ome of the streets . Recently, the city has made a concerted effort to r.aintair their areas . Much of this has required some nudging by the neighbor- hood residents , but the fact it happened says sanethir:g positive . In addition the City Officials have seen it appropriate to identify some of the neighborhood as low density in the land use policy for the City. i'iany long time residents and newer ones hav=i tai en the city by their word of direction toward family homes and glade many improvamants to their properties . We hope that this positive direction can continua by vou sharing a positive feeling for the neighborhood by approving a rezoning of the area to R-2. This shculd allow for the maintenance of the balance of a variety of property tvaes in the area, also. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Dale D . ahfaldt I Anna -Marie Rahfaldt J .
