Home My WebLink AboutA005 - Council Action form dated August 14, 1990 COUNCIL ACTION FORM Item # Date: August 14, 1990 SUBJECT: Restricting Parking on Ames High Drive BACKGROUND: Ames High Drive has been recently resurfaced and street markings are needed before the school session begins on August 27th. Proposed traffic control changes can be implemented at this time including restricting parking for all periods along the Drive, providing a two-way flow, and modifying the medians to accommodate this flow. Ames High School administrators are requesting this change to improve the traffic flow and circulation especially during school events and recess periods. The two-way flow in front of the high school would allow less concentrated movements at the Ridgewood/20th Street approaches during these peak periods. Problems on Ames High Drive are currently being experienced when traffic is snarled during peak periods because of parked vehicles along the median strip and the loading/unloading activities in the other lanes. Currently parking is restricted in these lanes along the median strip from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. , Monday through Friday. Staff recommends that the parking along the median be restricted for all periods and the pro- posed traffic control changes be implemented. ALTERNATIVES 1. Restrict parking for all periods by ordinance along the Ames High Drive median strip. 2. Deny the request. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt alter- native number 1 above, by restricting parking for all periods by ordinance along the Ames High Drive median strip. Because of the timing of this action and the opening of school on August 27th, staff requests that Council consider waiving the requirement for 3 separate readings and adopt the parking changes.
