HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Memo to Homeowners dated March 1, 1990 notifying of adoption of onsite wastewater treatment and disposal systems MEMORANDUM
TO: Ames Homeowners Utilizing Onsite Sewage Disposal Systems
FROM: Kevin Anderson, City Sanitarian
DATE: March 1, 1990
RE: Onsite Sewage Disposal Systems
This letter is to notify you that the City of Ames is in the process of
adopting Chapter 69 ONSITE WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL
SYSTEMS found in Section 567 (Environmental Protection) of the Iowa
Administration Code.
These regulations will insure the proper design and installation of onsite
sewage disposal systems (septic tanks and drainfields) within Ames where
municipal sanitary sewer is currently not accessible or is unavailable.
Adopting these regulations DOES NOT mean the City of Ames is asking or
requiring you to hook up to city sewer! !
What these regulations will mean is as follows: when any repair,
reconstruction, or new installation of an onsite disposal system is required a
permit must be obtained through the city, the system will be installed
according to state laws and inspections will be conducted before the system is
placed into use. This will result in a proper installation with no pollution
occurring to ground surfaces or water sources. Proper installation and
ongoing maintenance also insures you the home/property owner of an expected
longer life of your disposal system.
The City does plan to initiate a biannual surveillance of existing systems
within Ames to insure they are working properly.
The first reading of the proposed ordinance is scheduled for the March 20,
1990 Ames City Council meeting. Public comments will be received at that
time.
